Document equipment, upgrades and recent repairs

The useful question is what the market recognizes, not simply how much you spent.

Separate factory equipment from modifications

A factory package can change which vehicles are genuinely comparable. Record the package name, build information and visible features. For aftermarket equipment, record the make, model, installation date, receipts and condition. Ask whether the policy treats it as part of the vehicle, separately covered property or excluded equipment.

Do not count an option twice

A report may include equipment in the base trim, in a package or as a separate adjustment. Ask where it appears before requesting an additional credit. A window sticker is useful for confirming original configuration, but a sticker price is not the same as current used-vehicle value.

Maintenance supports condition

Tires, brakes, an engine repair or routine maintenance can be important evidence. A buyer may still expect a running, maintained vehicle. Explain why the work changes the comparison rather than assuming every dollar is recoverable. Keep warranties and receipts, but separate value from coverage questions.

Specialty vehicles require a broader evidence file

  • Identify restoration work, provenance and documented specifications.
  • Photograph unique components and retain supporting records.
  • Separate a finished comparable vehicle from a project or incomplete build.
  • Explain geographic expansion when the vehicle is too uncommon for a narrow local search.

Questions to send the insurer

Ask which equipment was recognized, whether it is built into the trim value, how additional equipment was valued and whether a policy limit applies. If coverage for a modification is denied, request that explanation separately from the vehicle valuation.
