Before you decide to keep a totaled vehicle

Compare the cash payment with the practical cost of retaining, repairing, titling and insuring the vehicle.

Get both settlement versions

Ask for the settlement if the insurer takes the vehicle and if you retain it. Identify the salvage amount and its basis. Keep the deductible, lender payoff and other adjustments separate so you can see the actual effect of retention.

Check the lender and title process

A lender or lessor may restrict retention. State motor vehicle agencies control title and registration requirements. Ask about the specific vehicle and title status before you spend money on repairs. A title or VIN procedure is not a promise that the vehicle is safe.

Estimate more than visible repairs

  • Hidden damage and required repair procedures.
  • Transport, storage, inspection and registration expenses.
  • Availability of coverage after repair.
  • Future resale effects and required disclosures.
  • The value of your time and the possibility that repairs cost more than expected.

Preserve the evidence

Photograph the vehicle and keep all estimates and valuation records before repairs alter the evidence. Do not drive a damaged vehicle just to get more photographs or a repair quote. Use a qualified repair professional to evaluate safety concerns.

Make a deliberate choice

Retention can make sense for some owners, but an attractive salvage deduction alone is not enough. Compare a realistic completed cost with alternative transportation and replacement options. Read the title-transfer and settlement documents before agreeing.
