Appraisal umpire

A person selected under an appraisal provision to help resolve a disagreement between appraisers. The policy and applicable law determine the selection procedure and role.

Why the term matters

Ask how selection works, how costs are shared and what agreement is needed for an award. An umpire does not automatically decide coverage, fault or an injury claim.

A question to ask

“Where does this term appear in my report or policy, and how does it affect this specific calculation or next step?” Ask for a written explanation tied to the document.
