Read the actual provision. Appraisal is a process for a covered value disagreement, not a shortcut around every claim issue.
Ask for the policy form and endorsements that apply to your loss. Identify who may demand appraisal, how notice is delivered, appraiser qualifications, selection deadlines, umpire selection and cost allocation. Do not assume an online sample is the same as your contract.
An appraisal commonly addresses the amount of loss or vehicle value. It does not automatically resolve a coverage exclusion, responsibility for the crash, injuries or a legal release. Ask the insurer to identify whether it disputes value, coverage or both.
Give the appraiser the complete insurer report, offer, vehicle records, photographs and the applicable provision. Explain disputed entries without changing the original documents. Keep deadlines for storage, rental and other claim matters moving separately.
Follow the policy’s procedure for selecting an umpire and determining an award. The participation, payment and legal effect of an award depend on the provision and applicable law. Ask about costs before the dispute reaches this stage. For Oregon-specific reimbursement information, consult the Oregon guide and current official notice.
